Environmentally Friendly Cleaning by Tim Kress

Nowadays doing things that are environmentally friendly is the politically correct thing to do. One can see it in almost any industry that has a potential for polluting the environment. The Cleaning industry is no different. In fact whenever we do an act of cleaning around the house at a hotel or a restaurant, we are unwittingly dealing with pollutants. Most cleaning substances whether its different types of soaps, bleaches or glass and metal cleaners, contain all sorts of poisonous chemicals that is not healthy for the environment or the human body.

Because of the growing awareness of such products, there is another industry that is growing rapidly that makes cleaning products which are environmentally friendly. So how does one qualify something as environmentally friendly? If the product contains bio-degradable substances then it can be called an environmentally friendly product. These types of products avoid the use of chemically reactive or toxic products that emit volatile organic compounds which can cause skin problems as well as respiratory and other health problems. But it is not only the ingredients that determine whether a product is environmentally friendly, it also encompasses the way in which it is manufactured, packaged and distributed.

In the United States of America the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is in charge of regulating any type of industry that handles or deals with potentially hazardous chemicals. It is the EPA that ensures that products that contain toxic chemicals are properly labeled and stored. Indeed, the role of chemical exposure in causing dieses to the human body is a major area of study in modern science. Because of all this environmentally friendly cleaning products are put to a higher standard of testing by the EPA to be absolutely sure that such products are perfectly safe to use.

Unhealthy chemicals are not only found in cleaning products but also in much of the food, cosmetic and clothing products. It may be hard to believe but the average modern middle class home today will contain around 60 synthetic chemical compounds! By using chemical free bio-degradable products such as environmentally friendly cleaning products, will help bring down this number drastically.

In this day and age we do not have to use such chemically loaded products. With a little research it is possible to substitute almost all of the chemical based products that are used today. Let us examine a few examples of environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Lemons and limes are a common fruit that is available almost year round. The juice of the lemon is a great cleaning agent. Borax, also known as sodium borate, is a naturally occurring mineral that can be used for cleaning purposes. Vinegar, which is a widely known and used food substance, is also a good cleanser. Baking soda is another food substance that has been used for cleaning purposes for a long time. It has shown to be good at removing stains; it is also used in certain types of tooth paste because of its capability of making teeth whiter.

Other Examples of environmentally friendly cleaning products include, washing soda or sodium carbonate, vegetable oil based soap, mineral oil and plants that have high levels of saponin.
