Foams are used in a broad range of both practical uses such as medical applications to fun novelty items or marketing materials. Foam can be manufactured to provide very specific physical properties or be designed to be either visually appealing or at least noticeable and high impact (whilst not necessarily visually appealing).
Foams are commonly employed in applications where they are needed to be highly absorbent and are conversely used in applications where they have been designed to not absorb water. Some foam are brightly coloured in a deliberate attempt to attract attention or they can be coloured to blend in and be discrete.
In short, foam can be manufactured or shaped and utilised in many different ways to fulfil many different roles. Foam is used in so many different applications and new ones are always being conceived. It is not uncommon for a spin-off idea to become more prevalent than the original intended purpose.
Memory foam is a common user name to describe foams typically used in furniture applications where they retain good shape by bouncing back to their original shape when pressure is relieved.
