Motorola, the bigwig handset makers are attempting to sell off their business. One of the top brands as far as mobiles are concerned Motorola's decision to do away with their business has been triggered by the losses that the company has undergone faced by tight competition from its contenders like Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson. These three brands along with Motorola were the names to reckon with in the Mobile handset business. Unfortunately, the company has been left behind by its three stronger contemporaries in the race to the top. All this inspite of the fact that Motorola is the third biggest manufacturer of mobile handsets all over the world. The news of its selling of the business was confirmed on the 26th of March 2008.
The handset business of the company stands at a towering $3.8 billion. According to insiders of the company, the decision sparked off as a result of continual pressure from Carl Icahn, a billion investor, to sell of the business. The company only registered losses and the profits if any were coming in meager quantities. Motorola, as a result of the losses has also witnessed a fall in its shares from 22% to 12% since December 2006. Though the company was known to manufacture some of the trendiest handsets, the last successful model was MotoRazr launched in 2006. Fierce competition and unfavorable turn of events have compelled the rein holders of the company to sell the business.
The companies who are planning to bid for Motorola Handset business are pulling up their socks and preparing hard to acquire the billion dollars worth business. One company who will be among the bidders is India based consumer goods giants, Videocon. The Spokespersons for the company has confirmed the news that the company will be bidding for Motorola handsets business. It has already started making preparations for its bid. It will be a tough task however, for the company to raise money for the bid owing to the low spate in the credit market.
Videocon has had mixed results as far as its bidding for international markets goes. The company successfully acquired Thomson and Electrolux while it failed in the bidding of South Korean Daewoo electronics. Videocon has already planned to invest a whopping Rs 6000 crores in 23 circles of India. In case Videocon succeeds in acquiring the Motorola handset business, it will be another feather in the cap for the powerful Indian market.
