CASHMERE CARE: STORING YOUR OUT OF SEASON CASHMERE CLOTHES by Andrea Crome
We all love our gorgeous cashmere, unfortunately for us, so do clothes moths. These pesky moths lay eggs in our favourite woollen garments and when the larvae hatch they feast on cashmere fibres.
With the average female moth laying around 300 eggs in her 3 moth lifecycle, there is a lot of eating going on. This therefore results in holes in our clothes which you might not notice until winter arrives and you realise all your cosy jumpers and pashminas are covered in holes.
The moth larvae love to eat natural fibres, this could include cotton, linen, silk, wool fabrics, furs and they have even been known to eat feathers and synthetic mixes if they are really hungry! Don't panic as there are precautions you can take to ensure that these unwelcomed guests stay well away from your clothes. Here are my top cashmere care tips:
1. Never put worn clothes back into the wardrobe! Moths love the skin and hair particles left behind.
2. Store your out of season clothes. Storing your out of season clothes correctly ensures moths can't get to them. Wash everything, dry clean garments if you have to, then fold items neatly (you can use a folding plate to get that boutique neatness) and place them into a breathable storage box lined with acid free tissue paper or a cashmere bag. Put moth repellent product in with your garments and store in your wardrobe until next season.
3. Cashmere sometimes goes bobbly, you can use a knitwear comb to remove these bobbles and a lint roller to remove unwanted fluff and hair.
4. Use a laundry liquid especially formulated for delicate fabrics, never wring out your cashmere clothes. Lay flat to dry so your garments keep their shape. Don't ever hang your wet cashmere to dry.
5. Use hangers that will help keep the shape of your knitwear, alternatively, neatly fold and store in drawers.
If you follow these cashmere care tips your cashmere should stay looking as good as new and hole free! To ensure that clothes moths don't attack your garments you should use moth repellent products. Natural moth repellent is much better than the conventional moth balls as they are not harmful to babies and pets and natural products smell much better. There are a wide range of natural products on the market including sprays, essential oils and fragranced bags that can go in drawers or that can hang in the wardrobe.
