You just remodeled your kitchen and added a copper sink, and you want it to look great for a long time.How do you care for a copper sink? Maintaining a sink made of copper, regardless of whether you purchased a custom-made farmhouse sink or an copper apron sink from a local big-box store isn't difficult, but you must follow the care and cleaning directions perfectly. Copper is a metal that changes over time and improves its surface with age.Its strong and can heal scratches and abrasions. Copper is unique in that it weathers into a beautiful patina over time.
Here is some professional advice on how to care for a copper apron sink or any copper sink:
* Don't resort to abrasive cleansers that have particles embedded or are strong chemicals. These kinds of cleaners can damage the finish of your copper sink and can cause irreversible discoloration.
* Find out the mineral content of your local water. You can find this information from your local water treatment plant or buy a test kit from a local hardware store. If you find out you have hard water, you will have to clean your copper in a different way. One way to offset the hard water is to install a water softening system. You can also wipe the moisture out of your sink frequently.
* Be mindful of what you leave in the sink. Foods like lemons and tomato are naturally high in acid that can damage the surface.Copper does however, have the ability to heal itself by resurfacing its patina.
* Use a cleaner that is recommended by the manufacturer that created the copper sink. Several companies offer their own cleaning formula. Buy several bottle of cleaner if possible, so that you always have it available.
* Clean the copper apron as well as the interior of the sink, otherwise the surfaces may not wear evenly and won't match quite as well.
* Scrubbing is unnecessary and often can put scratches on the copper. If you're out of cleaner, use dish soap and warm water to clean your sink.
* Never put a hot pan on the copper sink's surface. High heat can damage the finish. Be careful with hot items on a copper sink that has an additional finish or surface, that is not made to withstand high heat.
* If you get a sink that does not have a specific manufacturer's cleaner,, Wright's Copper Cleaner has been used on copper sinks for years and is recommended for copper cleaning.
