How to Clean an Antique Clock's Case and Movement   by Maury Popovic

Cleaning an antique clock is a fragile process because it is possible to wear away the clock's imperfections which give the clock its character and actually add value to the timepiece. Always remember when attempting to clean an antique clock to only use the highest quality of materials, for example Briwax Original Wax Polish is very good for wooden clocks.

Ensure to check the compatibility of the cleaning material with your clock before you begin. If applying wax or any other product for that matter, test a small area first to guard against costly damage from an adverse reaction. The clock surface should be clean and dry before you start. Wax should be applied using a lint free cloth and with a circular motion for best results. Use the wax sparingly and gently work it into the grain of the wood to restore the original shine. The glass parts of an antique clock do not need quite as much care and can be cleaned with ordinary household cleaner using a towel of cloth.

Cleaning the movement

To effectively clean out the antique movement you will need to wash it in a bath with a special antique cleaning solution. This will require some dissembling to get all the parts of the case and movement apart. The pivot points of the clock may need oiling up and re-bushing.

Most damage comes from not taking good care of your antique clock as dirt builds up in the bearing and causes holes which deteriorate over time. Normally the damage will start on one side and then spread to the other, so it is important to check the workings of the clock at regular intervals.

Oil maintenance is also important, so remove old oil when cleaning your antique timepiece as otherwise it will spread throughout the clock's movement. People frequently make the mistake of spraying Wd40 on their clock which actually causes more damage than good.
